Known from northern New Zealand waters to the Bay of Plenty at depths of 670-750 m. Commonly encountered in low numbers in northern New Zealand where it is caught together with Caelorinchus celaenostoma, C. bollonsi, C. fasciatus, C. innotabilis, and C. maurofasciatus.
